people, actually, who has debated both barack obama and mitt romney, so you are in a unique place to tell me what you made of both of their performance. whatever way you spin this from the republican side, the job front has to be good news not only for the president but also america, but the number has now gone down to 7.8% for the first time since 8% of his presidency. >> i think that's found to be good news, but i also think you have to take it in the context that 7.8% is still unacceptably high. but it is good news, and i think it's going to be of some help to the president, but certainly with the numbers of unemployed americans we have now, the 23 million, i guess it is, it's still an unacceptable situation. i think the president will concede that. >> jack welsh said today, unbelievable jobs numbers. these chicago guys will do anything, can't debate so change the numbers. is there any merit to the argument these numbers aren't quite what they seem? >> i would be very cautious about saying that, piers, unless i had some kind of substantiation to it, and, of course, we don't want to sou

've been one of the only people who debated both barack obama and mitt romney so you're in a unique place to tell me what you made of the new style romney and indeed, obama. before we get there, though, today's big news on the jobs front. whichever way you spin this from the republican side, this has to be good news not only for the president but also america, that the number's now gone down to 7.8% for the first time going below 8% in his presidency. >> well, i think that's bound to be good news but i also think you have to take it in the context that 7.8% is of course still unacceptably high but it is good news, and i think it's going to be of some help to the president. but certainly with the numbers of unemployed americans we have now, 23 million i guess it is, it's still an unacceptable situation. i think the president will concede that. >> jack welch has said today unbelievable job numbers, he tweeted. the chicago guys will do anything, can't debate so they change the numbers. is there any merit to the argument that these numbers aren't quite what they seem? >> i would be very cauti

, so of the debate watchers have noted, president obama didn't bring it up in the debate when he had a chance, talking about the economy, talking about all these folks who are unemployed or underemployed, and it would seem to indicate that president obama was saying that this was not worth pursuing. he certainly had used it on the campaign trail. it's been used in ads. but standing there on the debate stage, he apparently made the choice that it was unworthy of him and unworthy of the audience. will joe bidenring it up next week in his vice presidential debate? he may. we'll find out. >> it might have been a strategy, too. maria what do you think? >> i actually think it was a missed opportunity, randi. he should have brought it up. but i will guarantee you that democrats, including joe biden, will absolutely continue to bring it up, because after he said he thought he was wrong, or before he said he thought he was wrong, he doubled down on those remarks two or three times before he realized it was really hurting him in the polls. and we're talking about latinos this morning. majority

month. this is a big symbolic lift for the obama campaign after that really bad debate. they had the jobs numbers on friday and this today. it helps the campaign reassure their base and their supporters that hey, things are going on track. jim messina, the obama campaign manager sent out an e-mail touting the numbers. it reassures the base, saying forget about the debate. the people are with us and we have the money to carry the campaign forward. >> sometimes timing is everything. how crucial is this boon in cash collections with just a month to go before election day? >> it's tremendous. again, the debate was one thing, but the campaign is being waged in a series of battleground states on television airwaves, in mailboxes. really trying to reach voters. the romney campaign has said they have been saving up a bunch of money for this last sort of stretch. this money also shows that the obama campaign really can count on small donors and online fund-raising and raising money from text messages. they had started doing that this year, too, in a way that the romney campaign cannot. re

of us were waiting this week for mitt romney and barack obama to connect with reality, to connect with the lives we actually live. it didn't happen. the 90-minute debate went by, for example, without a word about immigration. not a thing said about the countless people trapped in our muddled policy. and this in colorado, a swing state, where both romney and obama have been courting the large hispanic vote. that wouldn't have happened if my guest on this week's broadcast had been moderating the debate, but their participation was rejected by the tiny group of insiders who set the rules. that's a shame because george ram mows and maria elena sorena are two of the most popular journalists. they work for the most important spanish language network in the country, univision. i met them for the first time earlier this week when they were in town to receive the emmy award for lifetime achievement from the national academy of television arts and sciences. here's part of the video presentation that introduced them to the emmy audience. >> they're two of the most well-recognized journalists
